All My Children, One Life to Live Canceled – Zynga and Facebook to Blame?

ABC has canceled the long-running soap operas All My Children and One Life to Live.
TMZ has a statement from ABC saying, “Guided by extensive research into what today’s daytime viewers want and the changing viewing patterns of the audience, ABC is evolving the face of daytime television with the launch of two new shows.” These will reportedly be health and food-based.
About a month ago at SXSW, we attended a session in which Manny Anekal, Zynga’s Director of Brand Advertising talked about storytelling through advertising, and specifically, targeting women/stay-at-home moms.
Pardon any stereotypes, but I’m fairly confident this is a significant part of the target market in the soap opera space.
Anyhow, according to Anekal, 1 in 5 Americans play Zyngagames like Farmville, Cityville, etc. Cityville, he said, has almost a hundred million users. Last year, the average user played 68 minutes per day, and though is based on browser time, even if you cut that number in half, it’s an “enormous amount,” even compared to broadcast television.“More women are playing Farmville than watching soap operas,” he said.

Lady Gaga Donates $1.5 Million to Zynga’s Fundraising Campaign For Japan

Lady Gaga is apparently on top of it when it comes to donating money to those affected by the March 11 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
Today, it was announced that the pop star donated $1.5 million to Zynga’s fundraising initiative with Save the Children, as well as to the American Red Cross.
Gaga raised these funds via sales of her Japan Prayer Bracelets. “I’m inspired that my little monsters banded together to help those affected by the terrible tragedy,” she said in a release.

LACC’s 29th Annual J&E Workshop brings together prominent journalists and scholars from the US, Chile, Brazil, Canada, Costa Rica, El Salvador and Mexico to Energy in the Americas.
Panels examine Latin America’s energy powerhouses, Central America and the Caribbean’s energy needs, geo-politics and conflict, nuclear and non-conventional renewable energy and energy development and security.
The Workshop features a special address by Genaro Arriagada. Currently, Arriagada is a non-resident senior fellow at the Inter-American Dialogue; on the Board of Universidad de las Américas; senior advisor to the president of the Club de Madrid; and editor of www.asuntospublicos.org. Arriagada has served as minister of the presidency of Chile, ambassador of Chile to the United States, chairman of the Board of Radio Cooperativa, and national director of the “NO” Campaign, which defeated General Augusto Pinochet in the plebiscite of October 1988. Arriagada served as ambassador-at-large and special envoy of the president of Chile to the Second Summit of the Americas in Santiago, Chile in April 1998. He was head of Ricardo Lagos’ 1999 presidential campaign and of Eduardo Frei’s 1993 presidential campaign. In January and February of 2007, he was public policy scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. Arriagada has published a dozen books and numerous articles and columns regarding political, social, and economic issues, including Pinochet: The Politics of Power (Boston: Unwin & Hyman, 1988) and with Carol Graham, “Chile: Sustaining Adjustment during Democratic Transition” in Voting for Reform. Democracy, Political Liberalization and Economic Adjustment (Oxford University Press, 1994). He has been a fellow of The Woodrow Wilson Center (1978-79) and The John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University (1990)
